So, a million weeks later I’ve finally gotten around to updating you on my second acupuncture session. It seems pointless to run you through the full processes, so if you want that run down you can find my first post here.
The Appointment
This week, exactly one week after my first appointment, was my second appointment. I started the appointment exactly like the last one, with a chat. My Chinese doctor and I had a chat about how I was going, if anything has changed from last week, if I was feeling better or worse etc. I told her I didn’t feel any major changes yet, but was hopeful. My neck was very tight from work the day before, I had about 5 hours sleep each night and was moving tables and chairs which put strain on my neck and upper back. The other main problem was my focus, coming to the end of the uni semester I really was struggling to keep my head in my studies. This could be from a lack of sleep, but I told her regardless.
After all that, I hopped up on the bed do start with acupuncture. We did really similar spots to last time. Some on the feet and lower shins like last time, one in between the tendons in my right arm, one on my left arm, four in my head, one on my upper stomach like last time and a couple in my lower stomach (see below). Please don’t mind my facial expression, it’s actually very awkward having your Chinese doctor take photos of you with needles in your head surprisingly!

This time I felt the needles a lot more, they were surprisingly a little more tingly in my upper body (my legs were fine). The one in my right arm, which you can see if you zoom in on the middle photo, really hurt. She told me this might be the case because it was between two tendons, but the best way to describe it is kind of a pulling sensation. The one near my rib cage (not pictured) also was painful. I think this was because my jumper was pushing down on it so about 5 minutes in she had to come in and adjust it for me. It was quite scary honestly, because it hurt to breathe and once she left the room I had no idea how long it would be until she came back. She also adjusted the one in my arm which helped a lot. Apart from those two spots, everything was all good.
After about 15 minutes she came back, took everything out and asked me to flip over for some more acupuncture points and some cupping. We had a chat about how she got into Chinese medicine, why she studied it and where. She told me a bit about herself and I was definitely more comfortable asking questions this time. She put some more needles in my left shoulder to relieve the pain, the first one she told me I would feel a grabbing sensation from the muscles then it would relax, which is exactly what happened, and she put a couple more around my neck area. She also put two cups on my mid-back area which apparently connect to the liver (pictured below, zoom in for needles in the neck!)

She then “stimulated” the needles, which from my understanding is where she moves them or twirls them around to get the energy to connect again and then she removed them. She added a couple more cups and went in with a deeper massage to loosen my shoulders even more.
She explained to me that today’s session we were focusing on the liver mainly, although in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) they aim for a whole body focus, and they believe that the whole body works as one. The cups on my lower back were a direct connection to the liver, and the others were there to help relax my muscles. The focus on the liver is mainly for stress, which has still been my main focus for this session, but again the other points were also used for a more holistic approach to my health.
Finally, I spoke to her about last week’s session and mentioned that the point she had done in my lower palm had really been noticeable. Not painful as such but was a dull pressure both during and after the session. She explained to me that this was not surprising as it has a direct connection to the heart and that she expected me to react to that as stress and emotion was a major focus for me and something she had noticed that I was struggling with most.
That wrapped up the session, I packed up and she suggested I make another appointment for a week’s time.
The Conclusion
So, to wrap up I had an overall positive experience with this session too. I can’t begin to explain the relief I felt in my shoulders afterwards, it was just incredible. Although this session was slightly more painful than the last and a little less relaxing overall, I was still happy with the outcome and will definitely be going back.
It’s now been almost three weeks since this visit, I did attempt to make a booking for the week after but she was booked out all the times that I was available and coming to the end of uni made it difficult to find a time, plus we had a public holiday in there too. So, I have my next appointment booked for Monday, and I’m really looking forward to it!
Love,
Meag
